PROTOCOL,

It is my honour to be invited here as the father of the day in this auspicious occasion and it is my greatest pleasure to be in the midst of my great brothers, sisters, in-laws and friends of Orukanam Local Government Area from far and near.

Let me take this moment to express my gratitude to the organisers of this event for the good work they have done to initiate the ORUKANAM ECONOMIC SUMMIT appropriately tagged “BEYOND POLITICS” to bring Orukanam indigenes from all over the place to its Economic Summit to put in place a blueprint, as I understand its purpose, that will bring a great developmental transformation to our dear Local Government Area. The choice of the theme of this Summit, ORUKANAM BEYOND POLITICS, is very significant, and goes a long way to explain the level of the patriotism and  intellectual capacity and commitment of our people to forge strong  unity, irrespective of our political leanings for the sole purpose of developing our Local Government Area using our endowed advantages and resources.  For quite some time now, our mental concentration on the Area, as only a geo- Political territory has negatively affected our development. I can say  categorically  because since I helped to create the LGA in 1989 with all the attributes for rapid economic, social and infrastructural developments of the Area, I can say that parochialism, selfishness, nepotism, corruption and partisan  politics have weighed heavily down on its development.  This has robbed the LGA of the necessary  amenities that ought to be attracted to the area at one time or the other, such as good roads, electricity, water, industries , markets, etc  that would have improved the lots of our brothers and sisters at home. In fact, at its creation, the only main artery road from Abak to Ikot Ibritam with extensions to Ikot Ekara, Inen and Ukanafun was essentially bush until I had the major parts of it done, when I was a Minister  in 1994/95, to make it motorable from Abak to Ikot Ibritam. I am happy to note that the Administration of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel has begun construction of the said major road in the LGA. I say, thank you to Her Excellency, Martha Udom Emmanuel, our First Lady, our amiable daughter, for that. Our Local Government area was the largest LGA at its creation. It was large in everything, geographical area, population and Federal allocation. Some of our revenues were even taken to subvent the expenditures of other LGAs every month.

We had the largest number of registered voters in the State and politicians were always scrambling to control Orukanam LGA but due to political hatred and partisanship, indigenes of the LGA have been known to collude with some political leanings to reduce its population through lack of enumeration and its registered voters through lack of registration of certain villages and abandonment of infrastructural developments to hurt their perceived political opponents. But, as it is said, man proposes, God disposes, Orukanam is alive and very well today, boasting of the kind of dignitaries gathered here today, including Her Excellency the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State to hold this Economic Summit to put in place an economic blue print for the development of the area irrespective of our political affiliations. We thank God we are blessed with great minds, intellectuals in every discipline and a large population of able youths who can be harnessed for this development. Apart from the human capacity and capability we have, God has endowed us with tremendous mineral and natural  resources as already enumerated by the different speakers consisting of large expanse of land, Palm Oil, Kernel,  Timber, Yam Cassava, Banana, Plantain, Okro, vegetables rivers, fish, periwinkle, Clay, sand, gravel, Oil and Gas, etc, etc.

In this regard, it’s my pleasure and seriously too, to propose the formation of ORUKANAM INDUSTRIAL AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED as a business platform to use in achieving this noble objective of utilising our resources for our development. In fact, when Dr. David Umoessien was the Council Chairman here, we had played on the idea seriously but because of political parochialism and hatred it didn’t take off. I entreat everyone here to think of Orukanam and its teeming jobless youths and believe that this instrument is the panacea to turning them away from political thuggery, terrorism, kidnappings and other crimes to meaningful and legal occupation in the Area. May I urge you to please take the message of this great event today home to your  families, relations villages, wards and even churches that there is a paradigm shift in OrukAnam to be united in economic emancipation while keeping our different political affiliations intact  and to embark on the reorientation of our sych accordingly to embrace the new social order of the Local Government Area.

I charge everyone to change the existing idea of depending on government for everything so that when your Party is not in power, you are a finished man or woman. By supporting and contributing to the Orukanam Industrial and Development Company Limited you can become independent of whatever government is in place and be able to live without fear or favour. The company will establish   industries and services in some areas taking advantage of the raw materials existing in those areas of the Local Government. We will   introduce our friends and business associates outside the LGA to the investment opportunities in the Area.

My life and contributions to mankind in different spheres of life from my family, LGA, the State and Nigeria in general might not be satisfactory to all but I think I have impacted tremendously on many lives economically, politically and socially that I count myself lucky and thankful to God, coming from this LGA, for those achievements. I therefore ask those whom I have at one time or the other, directly or indirectly impacted upon their lives to return such favours no matter how small to this effort to develop my LGA.

We should imbibe our rich culture of respect for elders and traditional institutions as an integral part of the custom and tradition of our Annang people. In this regard, I join all of you to express our appreciation and gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel on the appointment of a young, educated and very vibrant one of us, His Royal Majesty Obong Johnson Obosi, the Paramount Ruler of Orukanam Local Government Area. I pray he would use his God given position and his dynamism to unite and bring peace and understanding to the LGA. At my age of 75 years now,

I will do my best to contribute to the realisation of this initiative and I expect everybody, big or small, rich or poor to do same according to his or her capability. For example, if only 1,000 Orukanamites contribute an average of N1, 000,000 each, we already have N1billion and if the Government, with the benevolence of our dear daughter, the First Lady, gives us a matching grant, we can take off immediately with N2b to achieve our purpose. Not that every one of the 1,000 must contribute N1m but if some well to do indigenes would contribute N10m each we can make it. It’s not a gift but an investment in the Orukanam Project and such an investor will share in the profits.

Once again, I thank the organisers, particularly for the Awards bestowed on me. Thank you everyone, thank you Your Excellency who has shown so much seriousness, love, patriotism and commitment to the Project to find time to be here personally.   God bless you all.

Long live Orukanam Local Government Area.

Long live Akwa Ibom State.!!

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
